Course Description:
The Fundamentals of Accent Modification and Public Speaking Workshops are designed for non-native English speaking medical/healthcare professionals with solid written and spoken command of the English language.

Workshop One: The Fundamentals of Accent Modification

This workshop presents the basics of the American English Sound System and general rules for effective pronunciation. Training incorporates the pronunciation of challenging vowel and consonant sounds as well as standard word and sentence level stress. Script reading is introduced to reinforce trained pronunciation concepts, provide before/after speech samples, facilitate self-monitoring and selfcorrection of production differences, and improve comfort, confidence and effectiveness when using English in the workplace.

The workshop also introduces key tips for optimizing your communication skills. These tips are selected from Medically Speaking RULES, a training manual developed by one of the course trainers and includes areas such as the pronunciation of past-tense and plural endings, linking, using the telephone and other practical skill areas.

Activities include lecture/discussion, pair practice and independent assignments.

This workshop addresses critical components of effective public speaking focusing on content and delivery. Content includes work on developing attention getting introductions and effective conclusions, as well as tips for language use and persuasion. Delivery skills include mastery of body language and vocal variation of pitch, loudness, rate and rhythm. Techniques for handling questions, managing nervousness and utilizing visual aids effectively will be discussed as well. Participants will have an opportunity to give a presentation for discussion and analysis.
