Course Description:
The Fundamentals of Accent Modification and Public Speaking
Workshops are designed for non-native English speaking medical/healthcare professionals with solid written and spoken command of the English language.
Workshop
One: The Fundamentals of Accent Modification
This workshop presents the
basics of the American English Sound System and general
rules for
effective pronunciation. Training incorporates the
pronunciation of challenging vowel and consonant
sounds as well as standard word and sentence level
stress. Script reading is introduced to reinforce
trained pronunciation concepts, provide before/after
speech samples, facilitate self-monitoring and selfcorrection
of production differences, and improve comfort, confidence
and effectiveness when using
English in the workplace.
The workshop also introduces key tips for optimizing
your communication skills. These tips
are selected from Medically Speaking RULES, a training
manual developed by one of the course
trainers and includes areas such as the pronunciation
of past-tense and plural endings,
linking, using the telephone and other practical skill
areas.
Activities include lecture/discussion, pair practice
and independent assignments. |
Workshop
Two: The Fundamentals of Public Speaking
This workshop addresses critical components of effective
public speaking focusing on content and delivery. Content
includes work on developing
attention getting introductions and effective conclusions, as well
as tips for language use and persuasion. Delivery skills
include mastery
of body language and vocal variation of pitch, loudness, rate and rhythm.
Techniques for handling questions, managing nervousness and utilizing
visual aids effectively will be discussed as well. Participants will
have an opportunity to give a presentation for discussion and analysis. Activities include lecture/discussion,
viewing and discussion of videos of great speeches,
and presentations by participants.

Course Materials:
Each participant will receive a comprehensive manual for
each workshop including resources/references, group
exercises and carryover activities to work on independently
at the conclusion of the workshop.
